SAVE THE DATE! Pathways to Sustainability Transformation - Sustainability Science Day 12.5.2017

Sustainability has been discussed for decades in research, policy and business. Yet, given the global environmental and social challenges, it is more actual than ever. Increasingly, the burning question is what are the pathways that lead us to an ecologically sound and socially just society. <br/><br/> <br/>Sustainability transformations has been introduced as a concept providing understanding for a fundamental change towards sustainability. It calls for knowledge production that enables actions and learning. This means an extension from analyzing and exploring conditions for sustainability to co-producing knowledge of sustainability problems and their solutions across disciplines and beyond the academia. This approach aims to tackle complex sustainability problems and to find pathways, which may be unthinkable, yet possible. <br/> <br/>Helsinki Sustainability Science Centre is being established to support sustainability transformations together with its collaborators, societal actors and companies by using inter- and transdisciplinarity approaches. The conference Pathways to Sustainability Transformationsis a launch of this centre. Moreover, it will be the first UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network event in Finland gathering together leading experts in sustainability internationally and nationally. The programme is comprised of plenary lectures https://www.helsinki.fi/en/conferences/pathways-to-sustainability-transformation)<br/>The first talk in Finland by Professor Jeffrey Sachs has been confirmed!<br/> <br/>In order to present current research of sustainability and gather experts interested in sustainability transformations we call for abstracts to three thematic working groups:<br/> <br/>- Understanding complex social-ecological systems<br/>- Exploring the conditions and limits for transformations<br/>- Co-producing sustainability pathways <br/><br/>The presentations may be theoretically or empirically oriented and deal with urban, Global South and North as well as consumption and production of natural resources e.g. food, forest, fibre, water etc. In particular presentations that apply inter- or transdisciplinary approaches are highly appreciated. The format of the presentation is so called speed talk (5 min) with group discussions after the presentations. The accepted abstracts (max 300 words) will be published in the booklet Pathways to Transformation –current research approaches (full papers are not requested).
