It needs to be replaced by a worldview centered on the concept of functional organization, which includes but is not restricted to individual organisms. This worldview has long roots but did not mature as a scientific paradigm until the last few decades. I will provide an overview of the new paradigm and its implications for the central concerns of the Stockholm Resilience Centre. The talk will be based on a forthcoming article with the economist Dennis Snower titled "Rethinking the Theoretical Foundation of Economics". Bio: David Sloan Wilson is SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus in biology and anthropology at Binghamton University in New York. He is known for challenging "selfish gene" individualism in biology, for expanding evolutionary science to include all aspects of humanity, and for applying evolutionary science to real-world settings, first as president of the Evolution Institute and now as president of Prosocial World. His most recent books include This View of Life: Completing the Darwinian Revolution, Prosocial: Using Evolutionary Science to Build Productive, Equitable, and Collaborative Groups (with Paul Atkins and Steven C. Hayes), and his first novel Atlas Hugged: The Autobiography of John Galt III.
