Sweden in a changing Antarctic

For the coming two years Sweden will be the Chair of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources or CCAMLR. The Commission has a unique mandate to conserve marine life in Antarctica through ecosystem-based management and activities such as fishing should be carried out in a sustainable manner. Sweden is taking over the Chair in a time where three large MPAs, as well as major revisions to krill fishing management, is under negotiation. The Commission is also struggling to agree on management responses to climate change impacts and catches of krill are now exceeding the volumes that initiated the creation of the Commission back in 1982 and the fishing fleet is expanding. Tourism is also rapidly increasing with about 56,000 people visiting in the 2018/19 season. The symposium is organised by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (HaV), the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, KVA and the National Committee for Global Environmental Change. Unfortunately, most sessions are in Swedish but the one I’m speaking at is in English and will be about challenges and opportunities for sustainable management in the Antarctic.
