In this brown-bag seminar, Caroline will present findings from her PhD research that has used a social-ecological lens to explore long-term dynamics of systemic and transformative change in the Klein Karoo, a complex post-colonial agricultural dryland region of South Africa. Using a social-ecological regime shifts lens and a cross-scale historical approach spanning 525 years, the research examines how global dynamics have interacted with and shaped change in local places. Four major social-ecological regimes and three significant regime shifts were identified over this period. Building on this historical analysis, I then use a horizon-scanning futures approach to explore emerging pathways of change into the Anthropocene. Three divergent, competing, yet potentially co-evolving future pathways emerge from this analysis, highlighting different possibilities for the region’s social-ecological trajectory. As this work is currently under examination and has not yet been submitted for publication. Caroline would welcome feedback and discussion from the SRC community. She is particularly interested in exploring potential synergies between approaches, as well as opportunities to build bridges between the regime shifts and transformations fields.
