A short documentary film screening and discussion on food systems immigration, seasonal, and migrant workers. We will be showing the film “Blood Berries” (description below), a 50 minute film. We will follow the screening with time to process and discuss together related topics, including but not limited to immigration, workers’ rights, and the social justice challenges around immigration and food systems workers. When: Thursday, April 16th 15:00-16:30 Where: SRC, Holling The film, ‘Blood Berries’, is out of a project called “Decision making of aspiring (re)migrants to and within the EU (AspirE)”. The documentary, produced by the research project’s Thai collaborator The Isaan Record, depicts the experiences of Thai migrant berry pickers working in Finland and Sweden. A number of Thai citizens, invited to Finland by the berry industry to harvest forest berries, have faced exploitation as highlighted recently in media. The documentary, ‘Blood Berries’ depicts lived experiences behind the "gold rush" of berry picking in Finland and Sweden. Specifically, it shows what happens on individual level after a failed berry picking trip to Europe. Many pickers come from Thailand’s most deprived region, Isaan. The pickers’ voices reflecting their hardships and dreams are showcased through this documentary, which is based on a three-year period of following the migrants’ journeys. The documentary is produced by The Isaan Record, North-East Thailand based NGO and alternative media. It could be interesting to pair with discussions of on-going conversations around immigrants and national moves to make importing labor harder in the US (e.g., ICE raids on food systems workers and realization that “the U.S. will either import workers or import food”) and many other regions.
