Warmly welcome to a BBL with Taís Sonetti González, visiting postdoctoral researcher with the Powering Change with Justice project. Jointly with the Transformative Futures Theme, this seminar will delve deeper into a discussion about how different knowledge systems can be brought together. Abstract: AmazonFACE is a major Brazil-UK research programme coordinated by Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). Through an unprecedented field experiment in the central Amazon, the programme investigates how the forest may respond to elevated atmospheric CO₂ concentrations and what these responses could mean for the future of the Amazon under climate change. Yet understanding the forest’s future involves more than producing biophysical evidence. It also requires examining how knowledge is produced, interpreted and mobilised, whose knowledge is recognised, and how scientific findings enter public debate and policymaking. In this seminar, Taís Sonetti-González will present her postdoctoral research within AmazonFACE’s socioenvironmental research area. Her work explores the relationships among different sciences, Indigenous, traditional and local knowledge systems, public policy and territorial realities in the Amazon. Drawing on multi-sited ethnography, interviews, document analysis, stakeholder mapping and participatory workshops, the research examines the possibilities and challenges of creating a more plural and just science–policy–society interface. Particular attention is given to epistemic justice and to how participatory and collaborative processes may contribute to policies that are more responsive to the diversity of Amazonian territories. Taís will also reflect on emerging insights from this work and on the methodological and ethical questions involved in bringing distinct knowledge systems into conversation without erasing their differences. Short bio: Taís Sonetti-González is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Science and Technology Policy at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, working within the socioenvironmental research area of AmazonFACE programme. Her research focuses on sustainability transformations, epistemic justice, knowledge coproduction, and participatory methodologies, particularly in relation to Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Communities. She holds a master's in Political Science from Stockholm University and a second one from the Stockholm Resilience Centre, a PhD from the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), and is currently a visiting researcher with the Powering Change team at the Stockholm Resilience Centre.
