My research focuses on the dynamics of evolution and sustainability in the Anthropocene. I'm a theme leader of the Anthropocene dynamics theme and deputy director of the Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere programme at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences where I lead the research theme on global health and biosphere stewardship. I'm a macroecologist and evolutionary biologist by training, and since his PhD I've worked to integrate these fields with social-ecological research methods and insights in sustainability science. My most recent work seeks to provide an evolutionary framework for studying sustainability in the whole earth system including the domains of the matter, life, behaviour and technology. A book is scheduled for 2022/23 with Princeton University Press. I have over several years studied the process of species colonization of human habitats by so-called Anthrome colonizers. These species can lead to pandemics and famines, but can also be of high use in society. A major area of work focuses on how society can live with antibiotic and pesticide resistance in the context of global sustainable development. This work has taken place through leadership of a SESYNC synthesis project (Living with resistance) and coordination of a JPIAMR funded project (AMResilience). As part of this research he has introduced the concept of coevolutionary governance; led work on identifying so-called planetary boundaries for antibiotic and pesticide resistance; called for considering antibiotic and pesticide susceptibility as regulating ecosystem services; and explored what a societal transformation to a pro-microbial planet might look like, where humans enhance the than many ecosystem services microorganisms provide.
